The Capacity Needs Assessment Report Validation Workshop was held on the 5th December 2017, and the program was chaired by the Mr. Mary Whether Thompson, Chief Director Ministry of Trade and Industry. The event brought together 35 members from other institutions – Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA) and the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) – operating in the produce sector, representatives from farmer groups and staff of PMB in a single venue to discuss the validity of the assessment report.

The 1st Quality Produce Fair (QPF) organized by Produce Monitoring Board and Ministry of Trade and Industry (PMB/MTI) to showcase SMEs/MSMEs – Producers Organizations, Cooperatives, Exporters, mainly in the Agribusiness Industry, was inspired by the outcome of Sierra Leone’s participation in the Cocoa of Excellence Awards 2017. The sample from Sierra Leone was selected among the first 50 best samples that were submitted by 166 competing countries.

The Produce Monitoring Board in its quest to improve on the dissemination of market information and the marketing capacity of our local Producer Organizations (POs), Cooperatives and smallholder cocoa farmers to make them more responsive to the challenges of the volatile commodity market, recently hosted the Final Workshop of the Price Risk Management (PRM) Strategy for Smallholder Cocoa Farmers in Africa, on the 21st of February 2017, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown.

The Produce Monitoring Board in its quest to maintain and improve the quality of exportable produce (cocoa) in the country, had recently conducted Quality Enhancement and Produce Marketing trainings for Produce Examiners, farmers and produce dealers in all the major cocoa producing districts (Kono, Kailahun, Kenema, Bo and Pujenhun) in the country.

This was as a result of the quality check results (Quality and Weight Certificate) PMB is receiving from Produce Examiners attached to the stores of exporters and agents in cocoa producing areas and Freetown. What remained obvious in the prevailing predicament of the produce sector is that the primary responsibilities for quality maintenance and enhancement reside with farmers, produce dealers and Produce Examiners.
